{"id":1641,"date":"2015-08-17T11:03:43","date_gmt":"2015-08-17T15:03:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.peatix.com\/?p=1641"},"modified":"2015-08-17T16:52:01","modified_gmt":"2015-08-17T20:52:01","slug":"announcing-our-first-class-of-mini-grant-grantees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eventblog.peatix.com\/organizer\/announcing-our-first-class-of-mini-grant-grantees\/","title":{"rendered":"Announcing our first class of Mini-Grant grantees!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Although we&#8217;ve always been\u00a0staunch supporters of quality events at Peatix, we came to the realization recently that maybe we weren&#8217;t being quite\u00a0staunch enough.\u00a0After all, events, along with war and smartphone addiction, are key in\u00a0differentiating humans from beasts. Thus it was that the Peatix Mini-Grant was conceived and birthed: a\u00a0modest event-subsidization and human nature-bolstering initiative for the most promising and interesting events around the country.<\/p>\n<p>Mini-Grant applicants were asked hard-hitting questions like: have your organized events in the past? And, what event are planning now? The quality, to say nothing of the quantity, of the responses blew us away. There were <strong>5ks, roller discos, sustainable food festivals, pop-up dinners, fashion shows, classical music dessert tastings, conferences and dance parties.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And although we would have liked to make it rain grants on everyone who\u00a0applied, we had to pick the top three organizers who we\u00a0ascertained to be carrying out the most vital and inventive\u00a0work within their communities.<\/p>\n<p>So we present to you, with much pride, the inaugural class of Peatix Mini-Grant grantees in all their grant-filled glory&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>1. Heshima Kenya&#8211;Fashion Challenge<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/eventblog.peatix.com\/organizer\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2015-08-13-at-5.16.36-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1642\" src=\"https:\/\/eventblog.peatix.com\/organizer\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2015-08-13-at-5.16.36-PM-1024x289.png\" alt=\"Heshima Kenya Fashion Challenge\" width=\"730\" height=\"206\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eventblog.peatix.com\/organizer\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2015-08-13-at-5.16.36-PM-1024x289.png 1024w, https:\/\/eventblog.peatix.com\/organizer\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2015-08-13-at-5.16.36-PM.png 1299w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.heshimakenya.org\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\">Heshima Kenya<\/a>, a nonprofit based in Chicago,<\/strong> works with girls and young women from\u00a0Kenya who have lost their families due to\u00a0war. The organization provides shelter, education and community outreach services, among them an income-generating program whereby the young women <a href=\"https:\/\/www.etsy.com\/shop\/HeshimaKenya?ref=pr_shop_more\">hand-dye scarves<\/a>, which\u00a0scarves are then incorporated into looks at the Fashion Challenge\u00a0by some of Chicago&#8217;s most heralded\u00a0designers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/eventblog.peatix.com\/organizer\/wp-content\/uploads\/girl_and_scarf.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" size-full wp-image-1650 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/eventblog.peatix.com\/organizer\/wp-content\/uploads\/girl_and_scarf.jpg\" alt=\"girl_and_scarf\" width=\"430\" height=\"646\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Of her scarves and their use in the show, one 18-year old artisan said, &#8220;I am so happy. It makes me want to produce beautiful designs for people all over the world.&#8221; The 2015 Fashion Challenge takes place November 12th, and shouldn&#8217;t be missed if you&#8217;re within a 500-mile radius.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>2. University of Washington Vietnamese Student Association&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/peatix.com\/event\/108097\" target=\"_blank\">Banh Mi Run<\/a><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/peatix.com\/event\/108097\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1643\" src=\"https:\/\/eventblog.peatix.com\/organizer\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2015-08-13-at-5.20.18-PM-1024x412.png\" alt=\"University of Washington Vietnamese Student Association Banh Mi Run\" width=\"730\" height=\"294\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eventblog.peatix.com\/organizer\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2015-08-13-at-5.20.18-PM-1024x412.png 1024w, https:\/\/eventblog.peatix.com\/organizer\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2015-08-13-at-5.20.18-PM.png 1304w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The <a href=\"http:\/\/students.washington.edu\/vsauw\/index.php\">Vietnamese Student Association<\/a> at the University of Washington<\/strong> has come up with a downright brilliant way to get people outside and running: entice runners with post-race Banh Mi. If you aren&#8217;t privy, Banh Mi is a Vietnamese take on a sandwich, which in the opinion of this author and a bevy of others, has\u00a0at this point surpassed the American sandwich in terms of sheer fresh tastiness.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/eventblog.peatix.com\/organizer\/wp-content\/uploads\/lemongrass-pork-banhmi-3b.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" size-full wp-image-1651 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/eventblog.peatix.com\/organizer\/wp-content\/uploads\/lemongrass-pork-banhmi-3b.jpg\" alt=\"Banh Miiii!!!\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The inaugural 5K\u00a0is this October, and ushers in not only the school year but what may in retrospect be seen as a golden age of sandwich-reward-based running.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>3.\u00a0Resonance: The South Asian Awareness Network 2016 Conference<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/eventblog.peatix.com\/organizer\/wp-content\/uploads\/SAAN.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1644\" src=\"https:\/\/eventblog.peatix.com\/organizer\/wp-content\/uploads\/SAAN.jpeg\" alt=\"University of Michigan SAAN conference \" width=\"910\" height=\"250\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The University of Michigan&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=1&amp;ved=0CB8QFjAAahUKEwi08pP_lqfHAhUDbR4KHQbwDdE&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.umsaan.umich.edu%2F&amp;ei=0yPNVfS8CoPaeYbgt4gN&amp;usg=AFQjCNHCXoDHLM4ckRGCfU0W3NjM77rrVg&amp;bvm=bv.99804247,d.dmo\" target=\"_blank\">South Asian Awareness Network<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0attracts over 400 students from Michigan and across the midwest to its annual conference. Speakers from around the world will mine\u00a0the nuances of the contemporary South Asian identity, bolstering\u00a0SAAN&#8217;s mission to spread awareness of the social justice issues surrounding South Asian and South Asian American life.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Congrats to all of our grantees!
