Who run the world? Geeks.
Not girls. Sorry Beyoncé, can’t agree with you this time. Unless they’re geeky data-loving girls!
With terms like big data, open data, hackathons, and bootcamps going viral, making headlines, changing lifestyles, and even making big money (although that should not be your primary motivation) in the start-up world, it’s hard to deny that the data geeks are on top of it and the new “in” crowd.
In fact, there comes a day when the data geeks of the world unite and pit their brains together over some good old data crunching – 22nd February 2014, International Open Data Day!
So, what exactly is open data?
Think, new revelation in science resulting in cures for terminal diseases.
Think, harmonious societies with an avid understanding of human behaviour.
Think, revolutionary mobile apps that enhance and enrich our lives (we’re in that business).
All this made possible because data is freely available to the public to dissect, re-assemble, interpret, and result in socially useful applications! At least, that’s the hope open data brings.
We at Peatix are a part of that movement, supporting International Open Data Day in Japan and paving the way for innovation in four ways:
1. Providing in-kind sponsorship of sponsorship units on the event page for organisers to prominently feature event sponsors who make their events possible.
2. Prepayment of event fees before event day so that funds can be used to pay for other event activities.
3. Providing organiser support through a private Facebook group on event management and using Peatix to sell tickets.
4. Promotional support in collaboration with Open Knowledge Foundation Japan.
We’re on the double (or should we say, quadruple) to assist event organisers in planning and executing awesome hackathons and meetups!
Meanwhile, in Singapore, we’re also supporting the event registration of the inaugural hackathon using technology and open data to enhance business tourism via the MICE (i.e. meetings, incentives, conventions, exhibitions) industry – MICE coLAB 2014.
With 80% of business tourism happening in Asia and Singapore consistently ranking top as a MICE destination, there holds to be a wealth (literally) of opportunities to cater to foreign delegates arriving on our shores.
It’s no wonder the Singapore Tourism Board’s hot on the MICE trail, reaching out to the hackers community to think out of the box, re-imagine MICE, and collaborate on projects over a 3-day coLAB weekend organised by UP SIngapore from 21-23rd February 2014, coinciding with International Open Data Day.
There will be open data, innovation, and prizes for the best ideas – find out more and register here!
It’s going to be one heck hack of a weekend.
Are you an organiser of hackathons and meetups too? Get on the bandwagon and try Peatix for your next event – best of all, we’re free to use for free events like this Makers Meetup.
