6 off-beat cafes that doubles up as hipster event venues

Claire Ding - May 20, 2014

A venue is much more than a space to hold an event at. It sets the ambience and orientates your attendees to the type of event you’re organising.

If you’re an organiser of events in any of these genres – music gigs and concerts, meetups and community events, arts and design – you’ll want to check out these six off-beat (read: out of Tiong Bahru) cafes that doubles up as hipster but cosy event venues.

Venue Lowercase

Lowercase – It’s warm amber lighting makes the otherwise open space cosy and perfect for easing attendees into a relaxed mood to soak in the evening. Although lacking in quality acoustics, the extremely helpful team at Lowercase more than makes up for it. Contact: 6337 5581

Venue The Bravery

The Bravery fits about 50 people comfortably despite a large communal table occupying a significant portion of the space. Nonetheless, a string of light baubles and sometimes commissioned art pieces decked out as centrepieces on the desk often adds to the cafe’s character and an event’s laid-back atmosphere. Plus, it’s perfect for displaying event-related merchandise. The Design Society made full use of the table with an array of art books and their own publication journal. Contact: 6225 4387

Venue Artistry

Artistry is both an art gallery and cafe situated at the corner of heritage district, Kampong Glam. It’s one of the rare F&B spaces in Singapore that actively champions emerging artists in the creative scene so if you have an arts exhibit, talk, or gig you’d like to host, think Artistry. Venue Group Therapy Coffee

Group Therapy, located on the second floor of a shophouse in the Duxton precinct, offers up their space for smaller events. With cosy furnishings and boarded flooring, potted flora to liven up the room, and an aura of warmth glowing from its hanging bulbs, it almost feels like we’re being transported out of Singapore, just for a second. Venue Letoile

L’etoile Cafe‘s homely second story with its indie-like odd-ball mix of both modern and vintage furniture is set aside for hosting events. The space has seen the likes of the White Noise Quartet album debut and the private screening of History Channel’s Vikings. We’d dare say it’s worth the recce if you’re scouting for a quaint yet quirky space for your next event. Contact: 6298 2872

Venue The 3rd Space

The 3rd Space aims to be that events space to connect people out of home and office. With six rooms to choose from, our personal favourites has got to be The Square, The Lounge, and The L-Shaped rooms for their cosier vibe (and perhaps a slight bias to the bright cheery buntings, paper pom poms, and art that adorn their walls and ceiling).
