Most Singaporeans are familiar with food hopping but here’s an idea – event hopping! Did we spark your interest there? Here are seven art and design events at four local neighbourhoods, it’s time to paint the town red (no pun intended).
[ONE]
Kent Ridge
Who would have imagined there are thoughtful Japanese films being screened at the Singapore Science Park? “The House of Rising Sun” portrays the tragedy that suddenly hit a town and a family, brought by a nuclear plant accident, while Schoolgirl Complex (Nov 16th) follows a young school girl Manami and her encounter with a girl who ruffles her heart.
[TWO]
Bras Basah
The Akanga Showcase (Oct 5th) by Perspectives Film Festival screens at the National Museum of Singapore. 3 short films including one titled “Katong Fugue” – that’s one more neighbourhood to check off. The post-screening panel discussion with Boo Junfeng, Yeo Siew Hua and K. Rajagopal promises more revelations – so stay for more!
Just next door at the National Library, makers, tinkerers, hackers, crafters, artists and DIYers are gathering for an evening of conversations about prototypes, 3D printing and makerspaces (SG Makers Meetup #5, Sep 27th). Take a peek into the future!
At the same venue, The Design Society partners with Archifest for two sessions on “Storytelling” and “Place-making”, featuring speakers from Chye Seng Huat Hardware, The Finger Players and MAKE (Oct 2nd) and FUUR Architects and Light Collab (Oct 9th). We’re expecting magical moments.
[THREE]
Aliwal Street at Kampong Glam
Aliwal Street used to be the “Barber Row” of Singapore. A for Arbite celebrates the same dedication, hard work, and creativity with Craft, a weekend (Sep 26th – Sep 29th) of Singapore’s crafters, artists and artisans, centred around fine food and drink. Don’t worry, showing up is the toughest work you have to do!
[FOUR]
Jalan Besar
Fancy getting free coffee from the-cafe-with-no-obvious-door in Jalan Besar? Head to the Bravery for the launch of The Design Society Journal Issue No.7 (Sep 19th) and you might score some medals for your adventure.
More locales to come!
With more events taking place soon in neighbourhoods from Tiong Bahru, Chinatown, Selegie to the Singapore River, check back on Peatix for more local explorations!
Are you an organiser yourself?
We’re building a local community of event organisers, and if you want to up your game and meet with potential collaborators, join us for our second session of Backstage Pass (Oct 17th), featuring Florian Cornu of Secret Cooks Club, Khee Shihui of OH! Open House and a third mystery speaker to be announced soon!
