Malaysia’s Crackhouse Comedy Club remains steadfast in their efforts to showcase the magic of live comedy shows

Melizarani - May 16, 2022

We are celebrating 11 years of Peatix this May!

This joyous milestone is made possible by the continuous efforts of our homegrown organizers in Singapore, Malaysia and Japan. Their initiatives to unite the world inspire us at Peatix and we believe it may spark new ideas for you too!

In conjunction with our 11th anniversary, we would like to turn the spotlight on our organizers and the incredible experiences they create, both online and offline.

Here is our little interview with Malaysian comedian Rizal van Geyzel and his efforts to build and run Crackhouse Comedy Club, a comedy institution that continues to nurture and showcase local stand up comedians.

Tell us about yourself and Crackhouse Comedy Club Kuala Lumpur.

I became a full time stand-up comedian in 2013, 5 years after running and performing regularly at open mics and occasional shows around the region. In 2014, comedians in KL (all 5 of us) decided that the time was ripe to have a venue we call home. A place that is conducive for comedy and where we can grow a grassroots scene and invite international headliners to come and perform. We’re in our 8th year and have since seen and bred stars that are now on Netflix.

What inspired you to start Crackhouse Comedy Club Kuala Lumpur and what motivates you to keep running it?

There are so many extremely talented comedians who are not always a household name yet they are touring, winning awards and hearts from audiences all over the world. We intend to showcase these talents and share with the general public the magic of live comedy shows where you can see things happen at live shows you will never see in a YouTube clip or Netflix special.

Do you remember the first event you created? What was one memorable moment from running it?

We ran the first weekly open mic comedy night from the former PJLA cabaret room from 2012. We saw a tremendous turnout and a slew of new blood to be discovered in the world of comedy. Names like Hannan Azlan, Prakash Daniel, Keren Bala Devan and many more came from this project. Kavin Jay and I brought Paul Ogata and Jarred Fell from US and NZ and they were magnificent at their sold out shows at both PJLA theatre and Zouk Club (Jalan Ampang).

One piece of advice you’d offer to new event organizers who are eager but a little nervous about running an online/offline event?

If you’re good, people will come and word will spread. Don’t second guess yourself and have faith in the process when even at times you may fail. Always make sure no matter what, you’re having fun!

How has Peatix benefited you the most in your event and/or community management process?

Thanks to Peatix, we were able to see an increase in publicity online and with an easy, user-friendly platform, most customers were happy with making their transactions online.
