International Women’s Day is upon us! Every community is enriched by the presence and contribution of women. This year, we’re diving into the theme ‘Embracing Equity’ by taking a closer look at how communities practice equity in their efforts to include women in their initiatives. From little choices to grand actions, every step towards creating an environment for all people to thrive and demonstrate our abilities is a step that counts.
We’re shining the spotlight on 5 women across various regions, backgrounds and teams of Peatix to share stories about the communities that empower them.
In our second installment of this interview series, we have Katherine Sobejano, who is a Native Apps engineer at Peatix and an active participant of her church group in the Philippines. Katherine shares with us about the various activities she pursues with her steadfast community of faith and how they’ve informed her acts of service to the world.
Hello Katherine! Please share with us the community you are currently a part of?
The community that I’m currently a part of is called Ang Lingkod Ng Panginoon. The English translation is The Servant of the Lord. It is the movement of single young professionals practicing or living out their Christian faith.
What is one activity that you do with your community which you enjoy the most?
Service activities are the ones that I really enjoyed the most. Because through service, I get to share my time and my God given talents. It helps me to share something of value to someone else.
What are some of the ways that your community has embraced equity especially towards women?
While it’s true that in terms of leadership, our community is predominantly male, we maintain equity by encouraging women to take on leadership roles as well. There are many workshops, seminars, and talks offered to help us improve ourselves, develop our skills, and discover new things according to what we need, and what we can offer to the community.
How does the Ang Lingkod Ng Panginoon community empower you?
By supporting and reminding each other that we women have our own unique strengths, I have learned how to accept my weaknesses and imperfections, and work on them without fear of being judged for being a woman. I have to allow myself to be courageous to believe in myself and acknowledge it as an act of bravery.
What do you think communities can do to include women better in their programmes/organizations?
Every group or community should include women by giving them an avenue to showcase and express themselves by letting them be themselves and by encouraging and equipping them to make life determining choices across different issues in our society.
